  1. haha this answer is gonna P.O. a lot of people but I don't care.  I have three cats and they're all declawed.  I tried a scratching post, scratching box, cardboard box, EVERYTHING with my first and second cats before I declawed them and both of them managed to destroy a part of our carpet and one of our doors.

Doors and carpet are not cheap.  Declawing costs like 300 bucks and its not as cruel as you think it is, all three of my cats were up and running that night and use the litterbox normally and chase things around all the time.

  2. tell your mom that u will train the cat to not scratch any thing

  3. it depends the cat. i have 3 cats. my female has ruined my couches. but my males are not as bad. so yes my cats have destroyed things lol. you can get them declawed but my vet said my female had to be 5 months old before i could do that and my male had to be 7 months. so they were already clawing things up before i could decide to get them declawed. you could get a dog crate to keep the kitten in until you can get them declawed? another person on here said 300 to do it. it seems to be cheaper in my area. 150 for fix and declaw for my male and 175 fix and declaw for the female. they will discount it if you do both at once and it saves the animal the trouble of having to go under twice and double surgery.

  4. Ive got a cat and shes scratched up some of our furniture, but not the really valuable stuff. You can solve this problem by getting your cat de-clawed or by buy a scratching post. I bought a scratching post for $2 and it definitely helped a lot.

  5. My cats did scratch up some of our furniture. My cats and dog get along very well. You could remove the cat's claws.

  6. I have two cats myself and I got them when they were 2 months old.  We taught them to use the scratching post so they wouldn't scratch furniture.  What we did was take this long feather stick that they loved and ran it over the scratching post.  They got used to the feeling under their paws and still use the scratching post.  They are seven years old now and they haven't scratched furniture since they were one year old or younger.

We also have a dog but we had the cats first.  In my house I have an italian greyhound and the cats rule over her.  They scratched her once on the nose and everysince they get along.  I even see them laying with each other once in a while

  7. Yes my cats shredded a down couch (they snuck behind the couch to do their construction), so I didn't know it until I actually had to move out of my apartment.

I'm going to get critcized for this, but sometimes your only option is to de-claw (front paws only).  Try EVERYTHING else first, but if this saves one cat from ending up in a shelter and getting euthanized, then I think it's a better decision.

Speaking of shelters, sometimes the history of their adoptees is known and you will have better luck with a cat that was already raised with dogs.  Otherwise, I would suggest a kitten.

    Good Luck

  8. My Cat Lexi Tried to scratch up things when he was a kitten but when we looked at him in the eyes pointed our finger at him and said firmly "NO"  and put him in the kitchen he soon learnt

he doesent do it now XD

  9. You could always cover the furniture with plastic wrap.

  10. I have 2 cats and they have never scratched anything up. we just get a like card board scratiching poast for them. u can get it @ like wallmart.

I dont have dogs but my friend has 5 cats and 2 dogs and the dogs r more afraid of the cats they dont really fight they will chase eachother around the house for a while.

  11. We have cats in our rescue program that we rescued from the shelter that are already declawed. NO I do not endorse declawing however there are lots in rescue groups that have rescued cats and they have been declawed.

It is a myth that all cats destroy furniture, if you keep their nails trim and provide appropriate scratching posts etc, they will leave your furniture alone.

  12. If you get the cats as kittens and teach them not to scratch the furniture then they wont scratch.  If your mom does let you get a kitten, it would be best if you don't get them from a pet store.  Try to find a private breeder or a shelter.  Good luck with your mom just don't bug her too much.

  13. Get yourself some spray called "no scratch" and spray it on your furniture regularly.  It works pretty well with my 5 cats, and I have alot of furniture.  If that doesnt work, get some "sticky paws" all it is is double sided tape, but you can get it at petco.  Good luck!  :)
