The character is not using a stroke that is customarily used in competition. But in competition swimmers usually swim at the surface in a straight line. And they usually aren't fully clothed or carry weapons.

He is not on his back, so he is not legal for backstroke. He is using a flutter kick, so he is not legal for breaststroke or butterfly. The only event that his method would be legal to use is freestyle.

He has a very nice arm pull, which is used in breaststroke events. However, you can only pull once where your arms extend back that far before you have to break the surface.

All in all, he seems to be doing just fine considering all he's carrying with him.
