People to People Student Ambassadors

I just got a letter in the mail saying that I'd been nominated to go to Japan. My parents and my sister think it's a joke, because she got them a lot when she was my age. But I'm seriously considering this. It'd look great on my college resume, I've actually always wanted to go to Japan, and it's once-in-a-lifetime. What's so bad? But I'm embarrassed to bring it up because I think they'll laugh at me for wanting to go. What's your opinion and what should I say?

  1. Dude,I did that trip, but to Euro. in '06. It was sooooooo cool! Your right, its a one in a lifetime chance, so do it! It was soo cool getting to see historical stuff, eat forigen food, and learn about new cultures! But you hvae to under-go a 9-month prep. thing. It just helps pre-pare you for the trip. But you have to under go a interview. Hopfully they will choose you! And if you do end up going, take int'll cell phone that works in China. Cuz Reg. int'll cell fones don't work in Japan! That is my biggest regret, not taking a int'll cell phone.

  2. When I was in school a few people went, and their lives went changed dramatically.  Most of my friends were nominated. Actually, one of the people who went to never attended college and managed a Starbucks for years.

It isn't a once-in-a-life experience. There will be many opportuntities that will be more rewarding and better managed in college.  Pretty much, it's an overpriced travel serviced geared toward type A personalities and students who want to see more than the major tourism places and be able to put something on their resume for college.

If you want to travel, do it with a church, service organization, study abroad, honors program (from your school), "Alternative breaks" (you'll learn about these in college), langague class, etc. from your local community and school. These are usually more affordable as they are not intended to make money.
