  1. The less meat people eat, the healthier they will be.  The red meat based diet that is widespread in America and Europe also uses too much energy.  The world would be better off if people relied more on a plant based diet.

Read "Diet for a Small Planet."  It is quite old now but the message is correct.

  2. Same as I think about cutting more trees so people can make more fertile fields so people can eat more vegetables.

I'd rather they knock down houses and live in wooden huts or cob huts. We need to keep trees, yet get rid of roads and energy sucking houses and cities.

Saying that, if you do not keep a forest under check it can destroy itself. The canopy will thicken and the soil will cease to be fertile. You need a space of 19 years in the level of tree growth for a healthy forest.

  3. no, i think they should figure a way to process some humans for consumption, so when we get tired of stupidity we can just send them to foster farms.

  4. It's sad. We should all eat less meat, preferably no meat.

  5. i live on a farm and it is not anything like that when you cut down trees they generally grow back and what we are doing on the farm now is practising orange grafting so that the trees will still be there but with oranges but if you go to china that is a whole different story

  6. It's just another sign of how out of balance humans are with the natural ecosystem. Rather than directly eating organisms occupying low levels of the food web, we prefer to waste massive amounts of energy (because the transfer of energy from one trophic level to another is very inefficient) feeding those organisms to other animals instead... and, as you point out, taking out the lungs of the planet at the same time.

Megg: There's no room for "a god made animals just so we could eat them" conjectures in the _Science_ section -- peddle those tales in the Religion ones, please.

Shade: I will just refer you to Chapter 1 of Silent Spring and leave it at that...

  7. Works for me...we have to provide food for the population to eat be it animals or vegetables.  Both are quite tasty!

Nice post Meg....and Mavster I will just refer you to Psalms 14:1 and leave it at that....

  8. Well, it seems to me that you are insinuating that we should not eat animals?... This is just incorrect. If you read the bible, it tells us that God created animals for human nourishment... As far as cutting down trees to make more farms... what are you talking about?! Like a specific thing that's going on? Or were you just making a question that people would respond to and argue over...?
