  1. She probably voted for Bush too.

Global warming seems pretty obvious to me - some people just don't get it - that's what nascar is for.

  2. Show her the data.  Two good summaries here.  The first graph is really good, verified and peer reviewed data:

    http://www.ipcc.ch/SPM2feb07.pdf

Tell her about all the people and scientific organisations that support it as fact.  Here are a few good ones:

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)

Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut and the first Commander of the Naval Space Command

"Global warming is real, now, and it must be addressed."

    Lee Scott, CEO, Wal-Mart

"Our nation has both an obligation and self-interest in facing head-on the serious environmental, economic and national security threat posed by global warming."

    Senator John McCain, Republican, Arizona

“DuPont believes that action is warranted, not further debate."

Charles O. Holliday, Jr., CEO, DuPont

    and how scientists agree:

"There's a better scientific consensus on this [climate change] than on any issue I know - except maybe Newton's second law of dynamics.  Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point,You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."

    Jerry Mahlman, NOAA

Here's a good website for information:

This short book can help you:

  3. First, you must clearly define your terms.  Do you simply mean the earth seems to be in a warming phase that is a part of a natural cycle of global warming and cooling that has gone on for all the ages or do you mean that human activity is warming the globe at an unprecidented rate?

I certainly don't think humans have had a significant impact in global climate, but I certainly don't deny that the earth's temperature is warming at the present.

  4. Just wait a few years and see how it turns out, kiddo. When I was your age it was all over the news that we were entering an ice age...ask any old f**t 50yr or so and they will remember it too.

The Earth IS warming. It is a NATURAL cycle. Al Gore is not your friend.

  5. is she religious ????

if  she is then say that explains her  disbelief ,

and the truth hurts for them

    ,

there    is  evidence all over the globe by now and many animals and plants have died even gone into exstinction,

in    China,Africa ,India Mexico and even France many people are dead related to Climate change

  6. well actually we are headed into an ice age not global warming.

"In quick summary, if enough cold, fresh water coming from the melting polar ice caps and the melting glaciers of Greenland flows into the northern Atlantic, it will shut down the Gulf Stream, which keeps Europe and northeastern North America warm. The worst-case scenario would be a full-blown return of the last ice age -- in a period as short as 2 to 3 years from its onset -- and the mid-case scenario would be a period like the "little ice age" of a few centuries ago that disrupted worldwide weather patterns leading to extremely harsh winters, droughts, worldwide desertification, crop failures, and wars around the world."

    sorry to be a bummer:(

  7. Start by talking her into listening to some real news instead of FOX. Just about every incorrect, but strongly believed idea seems to be one of FOXs talking points.

Get her to watch Gore's Inconvenient Truth. Point out that the vast majority of *real* scientists are on board about global warming likely being the result of human action.

  8. An Inconvenient Truth is an excellent tool... if you are able to get said friend to watch it. It works because it shows comparisons of the past, present and future of Earth's status. The pictures of glaciers long gone are great and irrefutable evidence (unless those non-believers are suspicious of doctoring).

Another way is to find proof that her claims are wrong (but you must be totally secure in your knowledge of the subject). This might work because it appears your friend will not shy away from an argument.

  9. Global Warming's exsistence is no longer argued apon. It's happening it's just that we're still not 100% sure if it's human's causing it or if it's cyclic. Tell your friend that scientist's don't really argue about it's happening's anymore, but merely about it's cause.

  10. Just ask her why she doesn't believe in this myth. After all, global warming took us out of the last ice age. The fact that mankind had no impact, withstanding, does not diminish the fact that the globe really did warm up.

Just as importantly, global cooling took place and put us in the ice age to start with. Mankind had no impact with this either, but hey, blame George Bush anyway.

  11. Maybe what your friend REALLY believes is that global warming isn't caused by man.  Even without man, the earth has been through cooling and warming cycles ever since it had an atmosphere.  Point to the last ice age and ask your friend if they have an explanation (other than a global warming cycle) how it disappeared.

I think every scientist believes the earth is warming.  But, not all scientists agree on the primary cause (man burning fossil fuels, the natural warming/cooling cycle, solar activity, etc.).

  12. You might not be able to prove your point... but try and get her to start recyling or something.  Any little bit will help and she has to recognize that all this trash isn't a good thing for the landfills.

Its a worthy cause to talk to people about... keep trying.  At her next birthday... buy her some reusable grocery bags.

  13. show her the pictures of glaciers around 1960 and the more recent ones ( there are glaciers that have disappeared in MY life time. (I'm 47)

  14. First I'd give the latest IPCC report a quick once over (don't worry if she doesn't like the UN, everything in the report is sourced so she can look it up herself if necessary) so you have all the pertinent information on the current change. Then I'd read through all the articles on this site:

    http://illconsidered.blogspot.com/2006/0...

Which has an answer for pretty much every single argument she's bound to try and use.

And last but not least I would get both her and yourself copies of the book 'The Rough Guide to Climate Change' by Robert Henson (you can buy it from Amazon.com), the book is a comprehensive non-technical overview of the science behind global warming theory.

After you've read all that you shouldn't have any problems convincing her at all, assuming she's reasonable about the whole thing. But if you find you need even *more* information on it you can check out realclimate.org, a site run by fifteen highly qualified climate scientists currently doing research in the field.

Remember, knowledge is power. So make sure you know as much about the theory as you possibly can before trying to convince anyone of its validity.
