  1. TV seems to hold a more negative effect on students in general - merely because it's feeding them negative information in the form of useless TV shows and programs teaching them the opposite of morals.  Certain things shown, like giving into peer pressure without repercussions often times, teaches children that there won't be a downfall to bad decisions coming in the form of 'well, they're doing it, so I should too". And this DOES affect student performance since it affects who they might hang out with,  and what they do in the future.

As far as using the computer goes, if properly monitored, I think it has a lot of benefit on the academics of students.  If they're taught that certain things like p**n and useless websites like chat rooms, certain message boards, bored.com and rotten.com should be avoided, while the Internet, for the most part is only used for academic work (misc being emails, etc), then they'll benefit greatly from using the computer.

In addition to this, one can look at this aspect from a point of view in which the computer is used for CD-programs such as encyclopedias or math/science tutoring.  In which case, it can be very helpful - this I know from personal experience.

As long as they don't become addicted to the Internet (something I'm going to try hard to stop for my children), they'll be fine using it.  I got addicted in high school and my grades suffered because of lack of time taken to study. Once I stopped being consumed by the Internet, I got top 10 in the graduating class.  There lies the clear relation.

And television nowadays is garbage anyway, save for a couple of actually intriguing  and thought-provoking shows.   I'd advise against it, since I do better in my college classes when I watch as little of it as possible.

Computers (the Internet, in this case) should be used more in college, when more papers are due, and children know right from wrong, having the common sense not to be lured into the grasp of predators.  Educational programs on the computer itself (CD installed, etc) are great for children as they grow up, since they're going to need to use the computer later anyway, and it helps them gain grasp of how to do so, as well as how to do things like math and other topics.

All of this, I say speaking from personal experience.  My general grades, last semester especially have been straight A's while in college.  A's and B's in high school - top 5% of my graduating class.  Hope this helps.

  2. I would think your grades would be lower without computers and tv.

My spelling is so much better because of spell check.

  3. well i found out that people who are used to writing their papers on the computer get 8 to 10 points better on writing tests.

  4. TV, not so much. Lets face it the programmes on TV now-a-days are very uninformative and educational with the exception of the discovery and history channels, along with various other stations which follow a simular patten. So I would say TV as little impact on people's grades.

Computers on the overhand make a huge difference, not only is there a wealth of information available right at your finger tips due to the internet but also many universities expect your papers and assignments to be typed in an APA style format which can only be done using a computer. Failure to do so usually results in a much lower grade and some teachers will not accept anything which isn't typed. Also when it comes to presentation, the majority of teachers give extra marks for those who use applications such as powerpoint, it shows that you are able to use and adapt to moden and the ever growing technological age of todays society.
