  1. Berliners speak excellent English. Only the southern states like Bayern you would find people who dont speak English at all or dislike speaking English eventhough they know.

  2. Yes they speak english. Most do. Very good engish in fact, but you will hate Germany- everything is expensive! Everything is taxed to death. There is not a single thing that is better in Germany than in Amerika. Trust me I know- my parents moved out of there and raised me here. They would NEVER go back.

  3. Berlin is a multicultural city; I lived and worked there for seven years, and most people speak at least rudimentary English. Don't expect English being spoken by immigrants or elderly people; they didn't grow up with it. But as in most parts of Germany, the younger crowd speaks a fairly good English. If you try and speak German, however, this will be very much appreciated, and you'll feel welcome. I think the biggest problem you'll possibly encounter is that people just won't LET you speak German, as they all strive to improve their English, and will be happy to meet a native speaker.

  4. Absolutely.  My husband is German..I speak NO German. We go to Germany and it is no problem...most Germans speak at the very least some English.

  5. Sometimes they speak better English than many Americans I know!!! More proper at least!

You will have no problem but to be honest you SHOULD learn to speak as much German as you can and use it because you will be looked at by more with more gratitude for trying to learn their language.  Just starting to speak English is not a good way to start off. Learn a few phrases and sentences to get you started and then submerse yourself while there in learning as much as you can from all you can. Ask questions as you need to while there from others they will more than likely help you but you will have no problems, most speak English too.

  6. All the young people who went to school in Western Europe after WW2 should have learnt English. Some people from the former East might not be too easy with it. Some might just be rusty and uncomfortable for not using it.

Berlin has many international visitors, it should be easy for you to get around. Many people might be happy to use their language knowledge or like to be helpful. Some people might engage you in a conversation about the American war politics.

People from every country and language usually appreciate it when you make an effort to learn or speak some words in their language. It will open you many doors if you try.

  7. In Germany most people speaking English, because they start to learn 3. grade at schools this foreign language.

So don't worry, you good to go.... Have fun in Berlin, it's a great city.

  8. Most people do speak english but prefer if you attempt to speak German, I found that some people denied being able to speak English but eventually just spoke it.
