I've been with American Family Insurance for well...14 years. I have all my insurance through them Auto,Life,Home -Anyways- I was recently told that I am paying to much by many people. I am going to check out other companys and get some Quotes. My question to you is... have you regretted switching from them? and Why? What should I watch out for? I have been happy with them But, I dont want to be paying more than I have to. Thanks.

  1. American Family USED to have great rates about ten years ago. Their rates have gone up nation wide. Try another top name company, like Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide. Make sure when you get a quote it's a quote for the exact same coverage that way you can compare them side by side without any confusion. If you have good credit, and a good history when it comes to claims, you should be able to find a better rate.

  2. Something you might want to take very carefully into consideration is your agent. Do you know your agent well? Does your agent review your policies with you often enough? Do you have the kind of agent that will go to bat for you? Have you had any claims? If so, how were they handled?

Rates aren't everything. If you don't have an agent who will fight for you, you're not saving anything.

  3. Am Family is a good company, no doubt.  but there are a LOT of good companies out there.  Call an independent agent and get some quotes.  make sure they are quoting the same policy form and same coverages exactly to make your comparisions.  make sure you stay with an "A" rated company.  some of the BEST companies are ones you likely have not heard of.

  4. OK, it's not all about cost!!!  My insurance currently is with State Farm.  I'm paying A LOT more with them, but I have MUCH better coverage - and I'm very, very careful when I compare.

So, go talk to your agent.  Call an independent, get some quotes, bring the quotes to your agent, and say, hey, can you help me out here?? Because maybe they can.

And maybe your rates aren't so high after all.  The people you're talking to LIKELY are just comparing apples to elephants.
