Question

Im thinking about buying a 2001 honda civic sedan with 85k miles from a local dealer. The thing is, I test drove it, and noticed that the ABS light is on, and the breaks THUMP when stopping. Im guessing that I need to change the breaks, Will this solve the problem?

Also, the front right shock is weak (the dealer said so) so it makes noise when going over bumps, it kind of feels like the spring or something is not quite properly working.

So, how much of repair costs am I looking at (parts plus labor) to change the breaks, and fix the shock? (rough estimate) Thanks for your time!

In the frint you have struts which probably run about $120 each + labor. Brakes if it needs rotors probably $200-250

I would take down the VIN # and get a car fax on the car it maybe that this car was in a accident and not put back together right  I would just keep shopping  cause a2001 Honda should not be having these kind of brake problems so soon you need to look long and deep before you leap  Good Luck

Over all I'd say a 2001 Civic should be a pretty darn good car.However,the dealer is hiding stuff from you.A new car dealer would never sell a used car in this condition.I good used car dealer (I was one) wouldn't let you assume a "brake job" would fix the ABS concern (It WILL NOT).Your ABS problem could be relatively minor (wheel sensor) or could be a major expense(I suspect he has already had it diagnosed).I also don't trust his diagnosis of a "weak shock" for a front end noise.If you think the car is a pretty good deal-take it to a knowledgable shop (Honda dealer ?) and pay for a diagnosis/estimate.That way you know what it will take to fix & might even get a cheaper price on car after showing the seller how much it's gonna cost to fix (although I bet he already knows).

If they need to change the rotors, you're looking at $200 a wheel.

Add shocks.........good luck.
