People who live in Australia...?

We were talking about the landscape and stuff there and animals, my teacher said that more Australians have never seen like a kangaroo or kola bear like outside of a zoo....Have you ever seen one in the wild?

Plenty of kangaroos

I live in a capital city and only have to drive 5 mins to see kangaroos. Koalas are more rare but i still have seen them in the wild.

Koalas are actually not bears they belong to the marsupial family.I have seen kangaroos and koalas in the wild.

I've been boxed by a kangaroo (no kidding, it was hilarious) and seen many koalas. The 'roos need a bit more space, don't live near the city, but around here koalas tend to live anywhere that has a few acres of bushland. The roads are plastered with 'koalas cross here' signs. They're still a protected species, but they aren't as rare as that.

Your teacher is wrong we all see kangaroos , unless you never leave a Capital City you only have to drive approx 200k from a city.If living in the country you have to have a bull bar on your car as they are well know for coming across the road without warning especially early morning . Emus are the worst as they will run in front of you , you stop and then they run straigh back again but these are more likely to be found further out. She/He is correct about Koalas as they are very good at hiding as they spend most of their time in the tree tops very rarely coming out into the open .Wombats are nocturnal creatures and we have built crossings for them in well known road danger spots as they can wipe out a car if you inadvertantly hit them.I guess that we do our best to protect our wildlife but it is very hard probably just like where you come from.

The only kangaroo I have ever seen in the wild was about 1 second before we hit it with the bus I was in. :-/

Good on your teacher for fighting one of the most common misconceptions about Australia  - the myth that we all have kangaroos living in our back yards - but to say we never see kangaroos is going too far in the other direction.

Most of the population of Australia lives in the major cities, and while you are in the cities seeing a kangaroo or koala is pretty rare outside of the zoos. But once you leave the urban areas, kangaroos are quite common, and easy to spot. Koalas are less common and less widespread, but can be seen if you are lucky and in the right places.

I have seen both kangaroos and koalas in the wild.

If you go for a drive out to the bush you can find Kangaroo's and Koala's. Koala's are harder to spot because they just hide up in the tree's. I've seen Kangaroo's hoping along side the road.

I've also seen them at zoo's and wildlife parks.

I've seen countless kangaroos and koalas in the countryside, and kangaroos on golf courses and in the bush on the fringes of cities.

In Victoria there are known national parks where it is very easy to go koala spotting. My mum lives about one hour from the city (Melbourne) and has kangaroos grazing on her lawn at dawn and dusk.

I've seen plenty of roos  in the wild but not a koala. You have to spend a lot of time in the bush to see them wild. My uncle actually shoots roos for money. Farmers pay him for each roo killed. There are too many of them in some parts.

I have koalas living in my backyard, I don't see them very often, but I hear them every night in Spring (I live in a bushy suburb).

I see the very occasional kangaroo in the area, but usually you only see them in rural areas.

There are also possums and bandicoots in the garden, and lots of cockatoos and parrots.

We have wild kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats, bandicoots and possums on my property but no koalas, Koalas can only live in areas where the soil is fairly fertile, Our place has plenty of the eucalypt varieties that koalas will eat, but there are not enough nutrients in the leaves in our area. Not far from here though, they are common and there is a Koala rescue sanctuary only 4 or 5km away.

And they're koalas, not koala bears.
