Question:

People who place importance on names vs people who don't do this, psychological factors?

I notice some people will go around a room and walk up to every person and introduce them self to them by their name, other people will just strike up a conversation and not say their name at all. What's the difference in personality between people who think it is a huge deal with names vs people who don't.

another example, there is also one person who I have had coffee with several times, who never told me their name, and I never thought to tell them mine. It never occurred to us that we don't know each other's names.

Is this a psychological process , or reason for this?

  1. not everyone pays attention to names, that's why there are nametags.

  2. well, my husband is a very logical thinker and he is very focused on names.  he always introduces himself to people and makes sure he has their name.  i, on the other hand, like to focus on conversation.  i don't have to know a person's name in order to continue my converstaion.  i've realized that the more professional of a setting, the more people seemed focused on who they're speaking with.  kinda like for networking reasons.

when you're at an art gallery, for instance, and you walk up to a stranger and start talking about the piece, it's perfectly acceptable to never ask that person's name.  if you're at a convention for something work related and you just met someone important in your industry, not only is it appropriate for you to introduce yourself and get that other person's name, the event coordinators will go so far as to pass out name stickers.

i think a lot of times it has more to do with the people you're around and the place you're at than it does personality.  if i'm at my husband's christmas party, everyone i meet i will introduce myself to.  if i am standing in line at the bank and i like the lady's shirt who is in front of me, i probably won't start off by saying 'hi, my name is kelly and i like your shirt'.
