  1. it's interesting. it's relaxing. gives you time to think about important stuff while your problems leave you alone for a while

  2. It's hard to explain something like that to someone who obviously doesn't share my enjoyment of it. First of all, I suppose it's the sheer beauty of it all, but I also enjoy the sense of perspective that I get from it. I look out, and know that I'm looking at infinity, and realize that no matter what personal problems I face, they're really quite insignificant in the face of such vastness. I look out and wonder who might be looking back, and from where, and what they might be like, what motivates them to look into the night sky. I guess that ultimately, I do it because it's just the most wondrous thing that human eyes can see. I feel sorry for those who lack that sense of wonder.

  3. To me, there are multiple reasons. When I'm in a scientific/observing mood then I could care less about the beuty of the night sky, curse the moon, and document my observations insanely. It is a challenge for me and I do not give up easily on challenges.

When I'm in a phiolosophical mood I could care less about getting my telescope aligned, or documenting every single thing I see. I don't even bring a telescope. I sit underneath the blanket of stars that we take for granted, and realize no matter how important I may feel for some reason, I take a step back and realize how small we all really are. And if people could just stare at the perfect night sky for 30 minutes, for that moment at time we would connect on a basic level, clear of the fog of ignorance that blinds us.

When I'm in date mode, then the night sky is very important. Then I want the moon full and on the horizon! "So what zodiac sign do you have? Really, well cancer is over there if you can make that out."

But I study the night sky because I find it interesting and highly entertaining. Over this summer vacation I spend about 5 hours each night outside either observing, reading, thinking, and answering questions on yahoo answers. Nothing sets the mood for answering questions in the astronomy and space category than being out in the environment you are discussing.

  4. You wonder and imagine what's out there. Or it helps you think. Sometimes it's just mesmerizing. Sometimes it's romantic.

  5. They're stairing at me.  Eye for an eye.

  6. We are the Universe's way of knowing itself.  We are related to all life on Earth.  All the atoms in our bodies heavier than hydrogen came from exploding stars.  So we have an affinity with the cosmos.  Looking at the night sky gives a bit of perspective.

I also enjoy outreach.  My club sponsors star parties, holds educational events, and shows the sky to scouting organizations, schools, and even events for the blind.

    There's also a social aspect.
