Question:

People who use Verizon Wireless for internet???

I have been using Verizon Wireless card as my ISP because of my location and at this time is my only option. The plan on my contract is for 5gb per month and my question is this because it seems to add up way too quickly: Are there any websites and/ or programs that are significantly low in the amount of data is transferred? Like games or other sites because it seems like I am adding up way too quick and don't get much time to surf etc. Are there any programs that help you limit amount of kb/mb without being illegal? Do I have any options and are there any info sites on the problem I am asking about here? Sorry but I am a bit confused and should have asked before going into contract but whats done is done, I guess. Thank you and hope you can help.

  1. my advice... if you're using the service so much you find your self going over the 5 gb per month, bite the bullet, pay your contract term fee and switch to ATT's Cell phone internet access service, as far as I know they allow unlimited access.

I set my dad up with Verzion and although his usage wasn't heavy enough to go over the 5gb it wasn't very fast and he had lot of trouble with it. Now he's on ATT and it's much faster and more reliable.

If you can't term your contract then avoid websites that stream video and audio. 5 minutes of You tube can use up as much data as 3 or 4 hours of web browesing.

  2. At one time, 5GB was Verizon's "unlimited" plan. They routinely canceled the contracts of customers who met or exceeded that amount. Not sure if they still do. An article at Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/357694/verizon-offeri... seems to indicate they have truly unlimited plans now (for a lot more money). Generally, you can upgrade to a higher cost plan without any penalty. They like your money. They would like more of your money even more so.

In answer to your question, what you are asking about is traffic shaping, bandwidth management software. There are a number of packages available for Windows. Some only monitor. Some only monitor by IP address, which isn't particularly helpful if all the data is coming from one computer. Of the ones I saw, the one at http://www.netlimiter.com/ looked the most promising.

  3. Not sure, but if you stick strictly to their terms-of-service it's nearly impossible to get to 5GB...they forbid streaming, large downloads, hosting, file-sharing, online-gaming, etc.

Basically they only allow basic web-browsing and email in their terms-of-servace which is why they got in trouble for calling this "unlimited"
