People with EXPERIENCED volleyball skills - HELP!?

I am trying out on my school team. Am pretty short but am a decent player who doesn't suck. I have determination and will go any ball. I think my coach wants me to be a setter, but since I have little experience on this, what should I practice at home. She mentioned "move with you legs before the ball is hit to you".

  1. You can practice finger strength, or arm strength at home, but you need to play real games to make game time decisions.

There is a GameCube game called "Beach Spiker" that could help your reflection at home as you have to watch how your teammate hit the ball and predict where the ball is going.

As a setter you need to watch your teammates' body language and anticipate any wild pass ("move with your leg before..."). You want to get under the ball to overhand set as much as possible, which include kneeing down sliding on the floor for an overhand set. There is a "sit-up set" you can practice at home with one of your friends/family members.

When setting (at a perfect situation), you want to make full use of strength from your feet, legs, waist, arms, wrists to send the ball out, and fully extend your body after the ball is out of your hand. You can justify at game time to omit some actions in order to get the ball up, but you want to omit as little as possible to make it a perfect set.

Most begin-to-mid-level players tend to move their body first, and end up diving for every easy-to-reach ball. As you become more experienced you will learn to move your feet first before attempting diving. You may use that as an excuse to get a Wii and play tennis, but make sure you don't just swing your Wiimote while standing there, you need to move your feet to the right direction before any other action.

  2. While i'm not a setter i play right side & outside hitter and have listened to my coach yell at our setters for years.  She means that you have to move your feet to get underneath the ball.  Say someone just passed a freeball to you (your back is supposed to be to the net). While the ball is in the air you do the footwork (left, right) so that your body is facing the outside hitter position.  Then take the ball at your forehead and using your legs push the ball to either your OH, M, or RS hitters.

  3. good exercises are just to have someone toss the ball to you and work on getting your feet under the ball and working on your technique. There is also a setter ball that's heavier and helps build up you r hand muscles. Also remember you have the second hit so even if its crazy you should go get it! Good Luck!!!!!! =)

  4. ALWAYS KEEP THE BALL IN FONT OF YOU, WHETHER IT'S SETTING, BUMPING, OR HITTING. FOR SETTING, KEEP YOUR ELBOWS IN AND YOUR HANDS AS IF YOU WERE HOLDING THE BALL, THUMBS IN. AT HOME I THINK YOU SHOULD PRACTICE YOUR SETTING SKILLS, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY SEE MOST POTENTIAL IN YOU. DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR OTHER SKILLS. YOU SHOULD PRACTICE EVERYTHING BUT MOSTLY SETTING
