  1. Most folks w/ depression have experienced trauma or stress before age 12. After repeated stress the brain rewires itself to respond to stress a certain way. For a lot of people, part of that response is the production of a horomone called cortisol, responsible for low energy, sleep changes appetite changes, etc. associated w/ depression. My personal symptoms include the seed if a negative thought, becomes a negative obsession, leading to typical depressive symptoms, including sleeplessness, crying fits, and suicidal ideations. My therapist is teaching me to interrupt negative thoughts before they become feelings and actions. I'm also on meds.

  2. The two main symptoms I had were insomnia and a terrible hatred for my job.

If it hadn't been for a magazine article I wouldn't have realized that I had depression. Suddenly hating and complaining about work is the most typical symptom of depression in men.

The insomnia was the type where I could fall asleep easily, but I would wake up in 2 to 4 hours.

What really got to me was the feeling that I shouldn't go on living and then the suicidal thoughts began. I could see myself putting the barrel of my shotgun inside my mouth, pointed slightly up so the slug would go up through my brain.

That thought started looking better and better every time it popped into my head.

It scared the h**l out of me.

My physician started me on an antidepressant and I continued seeing my counselor.

With the suicidal thoughts blocked I began to rearrange my life. I decided to go back to school to earn an LPN certificate. Then when I could quit my job and start working as a nurse I would continue school to earn my RN degree.

I was off the antidepressant for a couple of months last fall, but I had to start taking them again.

I'm hoping I can try to stop them after I see my psychiatrist late this month.

  3. Well lets see. When I was 12 I had a surgery that started a downward spiral of surgeries. I had about 6-7 in a matter of 3 months. Not including one about 6 months before that, that paralyzed me even more then I was. After I got out of the hospital I was then diagnosed with mono after about 6 months of not being able to do anything. All I wanted to do was sleep (this was after the mono was gone). I would just cry because I didn't want to go to school or anything for that matter. My mom took me to a psychologist, but I refused to talk to them. I am talking she asked questions and I would just look at her. Needless, to say I wasn't going back. By that point I was seeing an awesome doctor that only dealt with adolcesents and he put me on Paxil. I am on the lowest dose and it has been 12 years and I am still on it. I will not see a counselor. Just not comfortable with that.
