A Beñat Extebarria goal in the 17th minute was enough to give Real Betis a shocking win over the defending champions, Real Madrid, on Saturday night.
Betis were feeling the heat after the 5-1 thrashing given to them by their derby rivals, Sevilla, last weekend.
Regardless, Betis responded to their critics in the most fashionable way as they managed to pull off an unexpected win over Real Madrid.
Real Betis boss, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-c29670 Mel, was quick to materialize on his team’s victory and said that everyone should forget about the derby match that ended awfully for his side. Instead, he believes all should enjoy Saturday night’s huge win.
“The past is the past; let’s not talk about the derby. I have to congratulate the players and the fans, who had great merit.”
The Beticos are now sitting on the 5th position. It is a dream start that Mel acknowledges. He also stated the fact that his team can sometimes pull off great results while on other occasions, they just don’t stand up to the occasion.
“We have 22 points now and being in Europe is a dream. In the end we got the three points and we regard the table with joy. The players deserve to be forgiven. We’re capable of being spectacularly s*** then beating the best team in the world.”
The Spanish coach has admitted that his team is now feeling comfortable at where they stand at the moment and said that they don’t have to worry about the drop zone.
“We have the tranquillity of being away from the relegation zone with a team that is growing.”
Finally, the 49-year-old remarked on the atmosphere of the match and how the Portuguese coach congratulated him and his players for their spectacular win.
“It was very close and friendly. He congratulated us and wished us a good season.”
Betis’ dream start to the Primera Division in this campaign continues as they are now placed 5th in the league.
On the other hand, their win over the defending champions means that Real Madrid’s chances of retaining their La Liga title are severely dented.
