Pepe Reina insists Liverpool need a good season to keep best players
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has spoken of the club’s need to improve on their current position in the Premier League in order to keep their most prized assets. The Merseysiders currently
sit ninth in the table and Reina states that the club needs to improve on that placing if they are going to build a squad that can compete with the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea in the coming years.
Reina told
ESPNsoccernet: “We have to finish this season in a better position than we are at the moment and make sure we build for the next years and try to be competitive. If not, it's going to be difficult for them to keep these kind of players.”
Asked if Champions League qualification was possible this season, he says: "Possible - why not? But we have to be sure that we deliver better performances otherwise it's going to be really,
really, really difficult. We are not probably as strong as Man City, Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham can be so that's why we have to make sure we build a better squad.”
The Spaniard’s admission that the club has been cast adrift from last year’s top five teams will come as a sour dose of realism for the Anfield faithful. Last season they were tipped by
many to even claim the Premier League crown, but instead suffered a disastrous season which they’ve failed to recover from. Roy Hodgson has since taken over, but fans are far from convinced he is the right man to take them forwards.
The club desperately needs to gain entry to the Champions League again in order to re-establish themselves amongst the league’s top guard, but they are showing no signs of doing so this
season. Sunday’s trip to White Hart Lane may well be a good indicator as to whether this Liverpool side can indeed mount a serious challenge on the top four places this campaign.
