Yes you can have pepper spray in the state of IL.  You should check with your local law enforcement for restrictions.  More than likely there won't be.  If there are restrictions there is a loophole.  Its legal almost every where to carry some type of dog repellent.  If it will stop a dog it will stop a person.  If your attacked by a person and use it generally there will be no legal repercussions.

Pepper spray can usually be purchased at gun stores.  Beware of what you are buying.  Most pepper spray sold in stores in only 2 percent OC spray.  Look for a minimum of 10 percent.

There are two version law enforcement type and civilian type. Civilian ones you can get just about anywhere, the difference being a lower grade normally use for self defense. Most of them you even order on line through www.qmuniforms.com or even walking a gun store.
