http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 defender and German international Per Mertesacker has gone on to admit that qualifying for the Champions League is crucial for Arsenal to maintain their name as being one of the best teams in Europe. At the same time, the player feels that if the
team fails to secure a European spot for the coming season, then they could face a massive clear out, while a number of players being reluctant to join the team in the summers.
So far this season Arsenal have managed to pick up a mere ten points from their opening eight games and are currently sitting in the tenth spot in the league. The team has managed to lose four games so far, while picking up three wins and a draw. Those statistics
are quite simply horrendous for a team like Arsenal. The North London club are supposed to be amongst the best teams in the world and with them currently seeming like a mid table team.
Mertesacker has now gone ahead and revealed that Arsenal need to focus on making it into the Champions League spot for next season, since at this point in the season, that’s the best the team can really do.
Mertesacker, when talking about the team and their future ambitions is quoted to have said: "It's vital that we reach at least the top four in the league, but at the moment we don't have the points to speak about that"
"It's important to perform well to make sure we move up the table. The supporters have to feel we are giving everything to succeed.”
"I am here to play football, to play in the Champions League and I want to be successful in all the challenges we face this season.”
"Therefore we have to play hard games twice a week and that's the challenge of being an Arsenal player."
Arsenal are currently sitting in the second spot in the Champions League group, with the team set to take on Marseille away from home on Wednesday night.
The Gunners went on to show signs of their former glory in their game against Sunderland this past Sunday, when the team linked together on a number of occasions and reminded everyone just what the Gunners are capable off.
However, one good performance is not going to be able to save the Gunners, who now need to keep playing at their very best in order to produce the best possible results week in and week out.
