The Gunners went on to suffer another massive setback last night, when they drew their game against Bolton Wanderers.
As a result, the North London club now find themselves sitting in the seventh spot in the league table and now have a mountain to climb, in order to try and salvage their season.
However, Mertesacker has admitted that the Gunners have the capability to bounce back and continue to push for a spot in the top four.
The German defender feels that it is only a matter of getting the team’s mentality back on track and once they do, they can easily push for a finish in the top four once again.
The defender is quoted to have said: "I think there is a lot of room for improvement”
"We have a very good side and good potential but we have to be good on the pitch. At the moment we don’t use all our opportunities.
"We are always looking for clean sheets and good performances. In the first half we created good chances to score but it wasn’t enough. I think in the first half we deserved to lead but it is only one point in the end.”
Arsenal have proven time and time again that they have the capability to come back and fight against just about anyone.
However, at the same time the team’s inconsistency and inability to finish games off has haunted them for numerous seasons now and has prevented them for achieving their true potential.
Arsene Wenger has been put under the microscope in recent weeks and the manager needs to really prove his worth in the near future, or he could potentially be voted out of the club.
