Question:

Percentage that goes to landfills??

I checked the EPA website and there is information and graphs on how much waste is produced (before it has been filtered for recycling and composting) but I can't find any graphs showing the amount or percentages of waste that actually gets to landfills.

I'd like to know how much biodegradable waste gets put into landfills.....

Maybe there is a way to calculate this but I'm an art student and sometimes numbers confuse me big time!

  1. Hi! Here's the info that I use in my training...

Every year, the United States generates approximately 200 million tons of "trash"--about 4.3 pounds per person per day. Less than one-quarter of it is recycled; the rest is incinerated or buried in landfills. With a little forethought, we could reuse or recycle more than 70 percent of the land-filled waste, which includes valuable materials such as glass, metal, and paper. This would reduce the demand on virgin sources of these materials and eliminate potentially severe environmental, economic, and public health problems.

This came from the US EPA in the late 90's.
