Question:

Perception Kiwi Kayak Query-?

I have never used a kayak/canoe before but i have just bought a second hand perception kiwi. It feels comfortable but i feel like i should have some footrests to push against. I have not used it yet and was wondering if this is something that i will get used to or do i need to get some footrests? The seat is adjustable but the only thing to put your feet against is a foam block at the bow. I have looked on the net and i cant find anyone selling kiwi footrests....any advice from an old hand at kayaking would be very welcome. Many Thanks

  2. Hi CAW,

Pretty sure that boat is supposed to have foot pegs in it.

Perception recreational kayaks should have a metal & plastic track running along the inside of the bow  on either side.   If the track is there, but no foot pegs, you can order the pegs here:

The foot pegs are designed to snap into a variety of positions along the track, so that they can be adjusted for the length of your leg.  For proper position, you should have your knees slightly bent.  In each stroke, you put pressure on the footpeg on the same side as your paddle.  So, paddle right, push on the right foot; paddle left, push on your left foot.

If the rail itself is missing, you can replace it with aftermarket  parts:

The foam block up in the bow is for flotation - since there are no bulkheads on that kayak (no airtight hatches to stow stuff) the boat could fill with water in a capsize and sink.  The foam in the bow will keep it floating near the surface of the water so you won't lose the boat.

    Good luck!

  3. I'm still trying to say your question 4 times real fast...LOL!

You might Google fishing kayaks.com They have tons of cool acessories for various brand kayaks, rold holders, electronics, loading/unloading car gear.

Good luck! Maybe some nearby boady shop could mold you a fiberglass footrest, based on that foam block, your height, shoe size, etc...Just a thought.
