Pere Riba, Frederico Gil qualify for the main draw of the 2011 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters - Singles
Pere Riba beats Tobias Kamke
Spaniard Pere Riba, 80th in the world, defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany in three sets 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 in the final round of qualifying draw at the Monte Carlo Country Club. Though receiving a tough fight, Riba concluded
the match in two hours and seventeen minutes.
The Spaniard started the first set, landing 58 percent of first serves to convert 71 percent of points on them. Whereas Kamke played at his worst, converting meager 50 percent on his 46 percent first serves. Riba converted two
of his four breakpoint opportunities and sewed up the first set with a 7-5 score line.
By all odds, the second set was the worse for the Spaniard as he suffered a breadstick defeat. Kamke gained 70 percent on first and 83 percent on second serves to take the set with a 6-1 score line.
The Spaniard kicked off the final set with much more energy and hit two aces. He converted 44 percent of points on his first serves and 75 percent of point on his second serves. Furthermore he collected 55 percent points in total
as compared to Kamke’s meager 48 percent and took the match away with a 7-5 score.
With this win, Riba moves on ahead to challenge Filippo Volandri in the first round at the clay courts of Monte Carlo Country Club.
Frederico Gil beats Flavio Cipolla
Portuguese Frederico Gil moved past Flavio Cipolla of Italy to ensure his slot at the first round of Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters singles draw. The event which is being played at the clay courts of Monte Carlo Country Club.
Apart from world number 2 Novak Djokovic who is not participating due to an injury to the knee, many tennis stars will be putting in their appearance at the Monte-Carlo tournament.
Playing the qualifying final, the pair met for the first time ever on tour. In the first set, Gil delivered a single ace and converted 69 percent on his first serves, whereas the Italian lagged behind with a percentage of 58 percent
on his 60 percent first serves. Cipolla saved 2 out of 4 break point opportunities whereas the Portuguese didn’t face a single, though banking on his service points he took the first set with a breadstick.
The final set saw the 26-year-old Portuguese hitting a single ace and 70 percent of first serves. Cipolla on the other hand, didn’t hit a single ace though he managed to convert 59 percent of points on his 59 percent first serves.
Gil converted 100 percent of his breakpoint opportunities and that handed him the set with a 6-3 score line. He will face Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in the first round of Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters
