Pere Riba overthrows Matteo Trevisan in first round – San Marino CEPU Open 2011 CH
Spain’s fourth seed Pere Riba proved true to his superior rank by dismissing wild card entrant Italian Matteo Trevisan in a masterfully executed 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 three set fixture on Tuesday’s roster of first round matches at the
San Marino CEPU Open 2011. Wavering in the first set, Riba Madrid established firm footing through the best parts of the last two sets, much to the dismay of the Italian crowd in the stands at Centro Tennis Cassa di Risparmio di Fonte dell'Ovo.
Riba Madrid is currently ranked at No.75 on the rankings table, nestled comfortably amongst the top 100 league. The player has had a successful season so far, in that he managed to reach his career highest 65th spot
in May this year, despite the fact that he has been unable to reach past the second round of many ATP tournaments – with the notable exception being a quarter final match against Pablo Andujar in Casablanca. The highest he’s progressed on the Challenger Circuit
was a semi final match at San Benedetto, Italy.
Italian hopeful, the 21 year old Trevisan holds a 0-0 yearly win loss ranking on professional tour and the Australian Open and Marseille are the player’s only ATP Tour tournament’s so far. Trevisan had won the Italy F13 futures
event in June against Gianluca Naso but has failed to move past the quarter finals at all of the Challenger tournaments he’s been a part of. None of the four Italian wild card hopefuls managed to move through to the second round at San Marino.
Both the players’ bagged 3 aces each in the opening set but Trevisan committed 2 brutally criminal double faults. Trevisan established hold early on in the set, registering a blistering breakpoint in the 4th game of
the set and won 14 points off his 20 serves while managing to connect 50% of his serves. The first set closed easily at 3-6, with the qualifier grabbing hold a fleeting lead in the match.
Riba shaken by the opener’s outcome came back on the court reinvigorated. Fighting valorously Riba took home the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 without letting Trevisan regain his initial position once. Riba Madrid amassed 8 aces against
his opponent’s 3 in sets two and three. He broke his opponent’s serve once in the 4th game of the second set and twice again in the last set. Riba had opened the last set from a position of dominance, breaking his opponent’s serve in the very first
game.
Overall Riba led the match with a total of 89 points against his opponent’s 78.
The fourth seed Riba is scheduled to meet special exempt Leonardo Mayer in their second round match at the tournament on Wednesday. Mayer had opened his campaign at San Marino with an emphatic 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 win over qualifier Maxime
Authom.
