  1. It's a waste of $12.  I was given one very similar to this a few months back, to test.  What I found was:

        * Over 100 sewing essentials included

    Most of these were bobbins that were so poorly molded that the thread caught on them and reels of thread that were

    A:  Too short to complete a project with, and

    B Such poor quality thread that it broke during sewing!

        * Makes fast and professional quality stitching and alterations

    This is rubbish.  The stitching was of such poor quality that it hardly held two pieces of fabric together!

        * Saves time and money

    Wrong!  You will waste considerable amounts of time trying to get it to work, and any money you spend on fabric.

        * Ideal for all fabrics

    Blatent lie: Had trouble coping with quilting cotton.  Couldn't penetrate denim at all.

        * Uses AC/DC adaptor (included) or 4-AA batteries (not included)

    And the batteries die on no time flat!

        * Handstitch express - Handheld sewing machine

    No, you use it on a table top!  It's way to clumsy to pick up and sew with.

        * Cordless & portable

    Possibly THROWABLE...

        * Includes thread, bobbins, spindle & needle threader

    See note above on thread...

        * Uses 4-AA batteries (not included)

        * Dual speed control button

    You get two speeds: slow, and not working...

        * Features foot pedal operation just like expensive machines

    Nope!  Tiny tacky little foot pedal that does NOT control the speed.  And breaks when you put your foot on it.

        * Bobbin rewinding pole

    Without which the machine is useless, as you cannot wind bobbins...

        * Bobbins and accessories included

        * Sews from silk to denim with perfect stitch control

    Rubbish!  See note above.

        * Horizontal drop-in bobbin

        * Needle pole

        * Take-up lever

        * Spindle

    I don't know why they mention these as 'features': without them, NO machine will work!

        * Short bobbin pole

        * Hand wheel

        * Bobbin rewinding pole

        * Dual speed control button

        * Thread guide

        * Foot pedal

    Why do they keep repeating things?

        * 2 Year Product Warranty

        * Made in China

    They can keep it...

    If you don't have $100 to spend on a decent pre-loved machine, look at Freecycle for your area and see what they have to offer.  I've picked up several excellent machines this way (if you were closer, I'd give you one!).  This one was free, and will do everything that little toy will do, and more: http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk/K...

    Put a pre-loved sewing machine on your wish list for Christmas/birthday, and make sure you take an experienced sewing machine user with you when you go to try them out.  Talk to the sewing machine service engineer about the type of things you want to sew, and have a read of this: http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm

    It might look a bit dry and dusty for a youngster to read, but if you are serious about owning and using a machine, you really need to do this.  And save your pennies for the mad amounts of kit and fabric you'll want to go with it!  :)

    Here's my list of essential (and frivolous!) sewing kit: http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk/K...

  2. It is a cute toy, and will make small items if that is what you are wanting to do.

    $100 would not buy you much of a machine either!!
