Performance highlights on the weekend’s World Cups: German Fencing Team – Fencing News
German female fencing teams failed to give a convincing performance at the World Cups held this week. A total of three World Cups took place from May 6-8, which included the Women’s Epee World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Women’s Foil World Cup in Shanghai,
China and Women’s Sabre World Cup in Bologna, Italy.
Women’s Epee team gave a disappointing World Cup finish at 16th place, compared to the top podium seed won by Germany’s Imke Duplitzer, in the Women’s Epee individuals. The German team comprised of Britta Heidemann, Imke Duplitzer, Marijana Markovic
and Monika Sozanska.
Imke was injured in the initial fight due to which the European Champion had to be replaced. Later, Marijana also got injured with an ACL (ligament fracture), after which the team had to abandon their play against the British team, allowing them to qualify
for the next round.
German coach, Piotr Sozanski was heart-broken and said, “Technically, the result has little impact on our position in relation to the Olympic qualification, but it still throws us back a long way.”
In the team competition of Women’s Foil World Cup, Germany was represented by Carolin Golubytskyi, Anja chess, Sandra Bingenheimer and Martina. They successfully trounced Ukraine by 34-19 and reached the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Korea,
32-45.
The team’s coach, Lajos Somodi Csiszar, while speaking about the side’s performance, said, “This was not satisfactory. On the technical capabilities of our girls, it has not located, as they were equal. But the mental problems they have
had a few. We will discuss together soon.”
In the Women’s Sabre World Cup team event, Germany finished at 14th spot. The team included Alexandra Bujdoso, Stefanie Kubissa, Sibylle Klemm and Eva Munz. The Chinese side ousted the German team 43-33, to qualify for the semi-finals.
The teams to secure top podium places in the World Cup were Italy, who ended their campaign on the first spot. Russia stood second, while Korea secured the third podium finish in Women’s Foil World Cup.
Women’s Epee World Cup saw Italy as the leaders, followed by Korea and third place winners, Romania. The Romanians defeated French fencers in the play-off, by a staggering 45-28 score.
In the third World cup that was held in the Women’s Sabre discipline, the Russian team won the top podium place, followed by Ukraine at second spot. China defeated France by 45-24, to secure the third podium finish.
In the individual events of the three World Cups, Germany’s 35-year-old, Imke, took the first spot in Women’s Epee competition. Alexandra Bujdoso secured an unimpressive 20th place in the Women’s Sabre World Cup. In the Women’s Foil World Cup,
Carolin Golubytskyi secured a 15th spot finish.
