Performance, not age should be the criteria to drop players - Vengsarkar
Former Australian skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dilip-Balwant-Vengsarkar-c54093 is the latest to jump into the debate regarding out of form senior batsman VVS Laxman’s exclusion from the national side to make way for younger players.
Commenting on the growing calls for Laxman’s retirement, Vengsarkar said that such decisions should be based on the form and fitness of players and not on age alone. The former Indian cricketer said that nobody should question a player’s growing age as long
as he is performing well.
"It depends on the form and fitness of players,” said Vengsarkar when asked to comment on reports pressurising Laxman to quit from the international cricket given his age as well as poor form with the bat. “I won't generalise the seniors. In cricket, age
is no criteria but those who are not doing well (must go)," he added further.
The formidable Indian line up was seen struggling against the relatively new look Australian side in the first three matches of the ongoing four-Test series as the tourists are trailing 0-3 in the series. The star studded Indian batting line up, barring
Tendulkar, failed to resist against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197 led Indian attack.
The Indian capitulation led to calls demanding exclusion of the aging Indian stars, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/VVS-Laxman-c2772 being at the top.
Commenting on India’s recent debacle down under, the former BCCI chief selector said that it was not a surprise for him adding that Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s star studded Indian line up looked completely out of sorts in all the three departments of the game.
Vengsarkar, the 55-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Maharashtra-c811 batsman who played in 116 Tests, was also critical of the Indian selectors for failing to provide a good bench strength.
"This selection committee has not groomed anyone. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RG-Sharma-c2309 has not played a match in a month. How would you expect them to do well
in their first match (if they are played)."
Another 4-0 whitewash is on cards for Dhoni’s men and the Adelaide Test, commencing on January 24, will provide the tourists one last chance the regain a bit of lost pride before going into the one day leg of the tour.
