Question:

Performance or passenger tires?

First question: I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. I drive regular city/highway mix, maybe a bit more city and this is a 4-cylinder so we're not talking a sports car here. Do I need the performance tires the shop is recommending or am I fine with passenger tires? I think the ones I have one are performance (this was my mom's car before).

Second question: one of my tires blew out and was replaced, so I only need 3 new tires. If the one tire is a performance tire, am I stuck buying the other 3 performance tires or can i get passenger tires and make the full switch to passenger tires in the change after that?

Thank you.

  1. Performance tires are really only good on those "perfect days" when the road is dry and warm. They are really bad on snow and ice and some offer ZERO traction in those Winter conditions. Some are just as crappy on wet pavement.

If you want performance then I'd recommend a second set of all season tires/wheels for the Winter months and swap them out before the bad weather season comes like in October.

    Good Luck!

  2. I suggest you go to a tire shop and ask the manger these questions. He would be the most knowledgeable for you.

  3. No you do not need performance tires. But if your replacing three, you might as well get all four. The tire store is trying to up sell. Just get some all season radials with an A rating and your good.
