Performance undeterred by challenging weather conditions – Polish Championships in Bydgoszcz
With the conclusion of the well-timed Polish Championships in Bydgoszcz this year, the athletics authorities in Poland killed two birds with one stone. They not only added thrill and excitement to an already scheduled event by giving athletes an incentive
to bag a ticket to Daegu, but taking the opportunity, they also finalised the team that is going to represent the country at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in South Korea.
It was perhaps the excitement to make it to Daegu that while remaining completely undeterred by challenging weather conditions, athletes displayed some of the best on field and track performances in the two-day event.
As the event kicked-off, the first one to annihilate her competitors was Hammer Throw defending world champion, Anita Wlodarczyk, who earned a place to Daegu with a throw landing at 73.05m. The 26-year-old girl, who could not avail many chances for competing
this season, displayed that she still had got the potential that could mark her dominance over the field.
Marking a throw of 73.05m was perhaps not less than an impressive shot, particularly at a time when a mere six weeks ago at the Kusocinski Memorial, the best she could display was a 70m finish.
The Rawicz born hammer thrower had been suffering from acute injuries after her gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. Ironically, the performance at the World Championships not only brought her a world record and a top of the podium finish,
but also a plaster on her leg. Having her on the field and that too in an envying form all over again, was not less than a feast for her spectators.
As the drenched weather lingered on with the tournament, the pole vaulters suffered the most, albeit, amid their remarkable performance, they too lived up to the expectations of both the selectors and their spectators. The most dominant of all, of course,
was the world champion, Anna Rogowska, who, despite being back after a hiatus of one and a half month, bagged the title with a 4.60m effort.
Displaying this level of performance was rather necessary for the 30-year-old vaulter as while contesting on June 29, she had her pole broken, culminating in causing her hand deeply cut. Tying her was the young Monika Pyrek, who, for jumping the same height,
marked her season’s best. Both athletes were content over marking the tremendous performance.
In the women’s sprint competitions, the title was bagged by local runner, Marika Popowicz, who epitomised her success in the stadium two years ago. However, the only setback in sprint running was the unexpected injury sustained by in-form runner, Daria Korczynska,
whose appearance at the Daegu Championships after this injury has become doubtful.
