Period 3 oxides?

Can you account for the difference in pH of the oxides of period 3? i know it starts of as basic then going to acidic.. but why?

  1. metal oxides produce basic solutions in water.

    Nonmetal oxides produce acidic solutions in water.

    Elements in column 1 react with water to release H2 and leave a hydroxide.

    Column 7/17 elements need 1 e- so can easily get it from H to make the H+ acidic ion.
