Question:

Period while breastfeeding...supply issues

How did you cope with the low supply during your cycle? My milk supply drops severely every month. I do everything to get it back up...I nurse my son almost constantly, I consume more water, eat oatmeal, take fenugreek etc. It takes at least a week and half to get back to normal. I have to give him an ounce or two of expressed milk a couple times a day during that time so he doesn't starve. I need to get my supplly up quick because I only have like a 10 oz stash in the freezer and that won't last a week and a half and I don't want to supplement with formula....Please Help!

  1. You may not agree, but this is what i did. it just a suggestion. During your drought try mixing your breast milk with your most perffered formula like half and half.

-the formula gives baby the extra calories he/she needs and its completely safe as long as bay is willing , able, and healthy.

    - at the same time baby get the best nutriton from mommy at the same time.

-and because formula is a bit thicker it can fill baby a little longer giving you more time to enjoy holding em peacfully in your arms or to take a break.

-because its mixed half & half the formula is easier to digest it's so hard on baby's tummy as it would be alone.

Well I hope i helped, if not Good luck anyway! =)

  2. Here's a link to a kellymom.com page that contains some tips for increasing your supply:  http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-su...

My supply dips slightly for 2-3 days before my period and I've noticed that my DS nurses much more frequently at that time. I'm sorry I don't have any tips for how you can increase your supply. Hopefully that web site will help or some other BFing mamas will have something to offer.

  3. Pump ever couple of hours for 30 minutes.  Some women "share" breast milk now.  I personally wouldn't do it, but I guess it is your choice.  They did have wet nurses way back when.

******P.S And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with supplementing with formula.  If it means your baby is full, so be it.  I sadly dried up after three months due to the stress of three deaths in my family.  If you have to supplement, that's okay, as long as he/she is still getting some breast milk.  I like Enfamil Lipil with Iron.
