Periodic electrical testing? how much should it cost & and are the old type fuse boxes still ok,?

Testing should be every 10 years.

An electrician CAN replace the wire fuses and holders with special Circuit breakers (These are made by ABB and are same size s the wire fuses they are designed to replace)  and add an RCD device but that goes OUTSIDE the box as an add-on item.

please not to get a RCD the earthing in your flat will be checked and often made up to current standards - this will only be an issue if you have plastic water pipes as for this to be done properly your pipes need to be replaced by copper!

Make sure the electrician who does this gives you and electrical safety certificate.

You can fit mcbs to certain makes of consumer unit, eg Wylex, but it's probably cheaper to change the whole unit. Nothing wrong with fuses, we use nothing else in the supply industry! Don't know hat country avarice is in, bt don't connect your lights to a 16 amp breaker, should be 5 or 6 amps! Also remember you can't legally work on the wiring in your house unless you are registered to do so, other than changing fittings basically. Don't connect the live to the busbar at the bottom, the live and neutral go to the main switch on the nit, the bus bar is controlled by this, and water pipes are NOT used as an earth, but they do have to be bonded to the main earth point, sally but not always provided by the supplier.

No you can't fit rcd's to an old re-wireable fuse box. You will have to fit a new consumer unit. It's realy easy. Just make sure that you unplug the 32 amp breaker that leads to the consumer unit. The live goes to the buzz bar at the bottom. Earth to earth and nuetral to nuetral. 1.5mm lights in a 16 amp mbc, 2.5mm sockets in a 32 amp mbc, 10mm cooker and shower in a 32 amp mbc, Fluerecent lights have to be wired into a typy c time delayed 16 amp mbc.
