  1. Is it general services (GS) position? Then your benefits are health insurance, pensions and free of tax. You may get lucky that they will send you to certain courses, but sincerely, that is really depending on local office budget and the (P or D  level) decision makers. But again, it is depending on the type of the contracts. UN is usually giving short period working contracts that not allow you to enjoy certain benefits.

For futher salaries information, you may see here:

  2. You get to travel plus good health benefits.

  3. UN contracts differ, based on which agency (UNDP? UNIFEM? UNICEF? UNESCO? WHO? UNV?), the location, and the nature of the UN mission.

Generally, local recruits don't receive as much as international hires (since they nor their families are having to move to the work location), but they usually make more than, say, federal government employees of the country where they are hired (that's true for even some UNVs). Medical coverage is excellent. Hiring will probably be for one year, with possibility of renewal for another year. If the office offers language courses, you would be eligible to take such.

If you get an interview, you should ask about the nature of the funding for the position (and, indeed, the entire mission).
