Question:

Permanent disability in NY?

My husband was just told from his doctor that they want to put him on permanent disability for his medical condition. He doesn't want to, he feels he can still work (I think he's just being stubborn). But he's also concerned that we won't be able to make it on SSI. He does make a decent salary right now.

Does anyone know how much you will bring home on SSI? I am thinking I could just pick up extra hours to supplement but I can't find any guidelines to figure out the expenses and income inorder to assure my husband we can make it and his health is more important.

We have an 8 month old as well. So I am sure she would benefit from having daddy home more, instead of going to my sisters.

Thanks!

  1. Does he have disability income protection where he works?  Like Aflac.  That may be an additional source of income.

  2. My wife was a school teacher, made about 45K per year, now she is on SSI, she gets about $500/month.
