Question:

Permenant Residency status and jury duty?

I am a Canadian citizen planning on moving to the States under the status of "permenant resident". I am assuming that this means that since I am not a U.S. citizen, that I cannot vote or participate in jury duty in the states? Would my name still appear on potential jury duty lists or voting lists?

  1. nope, unless your a US citizen you are not allowed to vote and you do not have to sit on Jury duty....

  2. Until you become a permenant citizen you can not vote.  Jury roles are obtained from registered voters lists.  No vote-No duty.

  3. Perhaps you should put this question in Immigration where better experts can reply.

Be careful about saying "I don't have to do this, because I am not a citizen."  For example, if you refuse to register for the military draft, on the grounds that you are an alien, the nation might decide that you are an undesirable alien.

You are correct that legal immigrants cannot do all the same stuff as citizens of nation.  However, in some states the way a person is selected to be on jury duty, can include things that have nothing to do with whether you are a citizen or not.

Rules and practices vary by state.  For example, in Indiana, prospective jurors are selected from people who have driver's licenses, which can include citizens, immigrants, and children.

Many things are flawed in many nations.  You can end up on lists where you are not eligible, so you just have to be careful to be truthful when ever asked about your status, and check any documents you sign, since often some form is filled out, they want your signature, you need to read it to make sure nothing is checked wrong, where the person doing the document is not competent.

  4. You have to be a citizen to vote.  However - a permanent resident is liable for jury duty.
