Question:

Permit for a semi automatic assault rifle?

Hey, i was just wondering if one would need a permit for a semi automatic "assault" rifle for hunting, or if only a clean criminal record is needed (18 years old too, of course). If you do need a permit, how much do they cost? I live in Wisconsin, and i've looked, but i can't find the laws for here on the 'net anywhere. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  1. The term 'assault rifle' is a term used by the media and anti-gunners to further assault our 2nd. Amendment Rights.  Please don't feed the frenzy especially if you are referring to a semi-automatic rifle, which so far are still legal and relatively unrestricted.  As applied by the anti-gunners the term 'assault rifle' defines a sporting rifle with a certain look:  You know, black stock, bayonet lug, capable of semi-automatic fire, high ammo capacity, etc.  A combat rifle is capable of full-automatic fire, etc, etc. AND these are already severely restricted in the USA.

As far as hunting with a semi-automatic sporting rifle you only have two real concerns right now:  1.  Make sure your State allows more than five-round-magazines for hunting or get the legal hunting magazines for your rifle; 2. Use enough gun; match the caliber to the game your are hunting.  In many States the .223/5.56x45 NATO is not legal for deer hunting.  In any case the .223 is a sub-caliber not capable of consistently and humanely taking deer-size game.

    Happy hunting.

  2. There is no such thing as a "semi automatic assault rifle".... An assault rifle is a fully automatic rifle. The AR15 you see in your local sport shop may "look" like an M16 or M4 assault rifle like our troops in Iraq are using but its not..... Those AR15 type rifles are just semi auto sporting rifles. and nothing more... Theres nothing assault about them except the fantasy's the media puts on them....

You do not need a permit in almost all states to own an AR15 or sporting semi auto AK47.... California and I think Illinois have some funny rules about those guns but I am 99% sure your ok in Wisconsin...

Next -- You are allowed to hunt with these rifles BUT BUT BUT almost all states have limits on how large the magazine capacity is... In my state we are not allowed to have a magazine that accepts more than 5 rounds.... Check with your state fish and game concerning that....

The average costs of an AR15 rifle is around $850 on up for a nice one... Rock River Arms, DPMS and Bushmaster all make hunting models of these AR type rifles.....

  3. Go to the gun shop. Fill out the 4473 (background check paperwork) let the dealer call it in. Wait a bit if you don't have felonies, warrants, beat your wife, or have restraining orders you pay for your gun and leave.

  4. First of all, they are not "assault" rifles. We have enough trouble with the anti-guns nuts as it is. If you like, you can call them "Assault style" rifles. One feature of an assault rifle is they have select fire, in other words, you can fire either semi-automatic or fully automatic. In the case of the M16, a 3-round burst.

Most states do not require a permit to by a semi-auto rifle. States like CA do have restrictions although I don't know what they are. You can walk in to a gun store, fill out the required 4473 form, pay the 5 or $10 for the background check, and after it clears (a few minutes or as long as 24 hours), you get your rifle and leave.

  5. That is because there are none.

Wisconsin has no purchase, possession nor hunting restrictions on semiauto rifles including high capacity magazines.  I hunt with my AR10s and AR15s.  There is no such thing as a semiautomatic "assault" rifle according to Wisconsin law.  There are machine guns and there is everything else.  Wisconsin goes according to Federal law and allows purchase and possession of short barrel rifles and shotguns along with full autos and suppressed firearms with no additional restrictions except for hunting with full autos which is prohibited along with every other state.

  6. As long as the purchaser is 18 or older, you can buy any H-Bar assault rifle as a "cash & carry" item.  You will be charged $8 for the Dept of Justice insta-check and out the door you go.  If for any reason, the assault rifle is determined to be a regulated weapon (collapsible stock, non HBar, etc) then you may have to go thru the 8-day waiting period.  Just ask your gun dealer, they will be most happy to give you all the information you need.

  7. There is no such thing as a "semi automatic assault rifle" so naturally there can be no permit for one. An assault rifle is a selective fire military firearm. Assault weapon on the other hand is a made-up political term that means nothing.

  8. I live in wisconsin. There is no permit, Plunk down your cash , wait 48 hours and pick up your gun. Also they are NOT "assault rifles" as they have no full auto capacity.

Some corrections about mis information in this thread.

    1) The $8 fee only apllies to handguns, Rifle backgoround checks go through NCIC and are free

    2) Wisconsin has NO mag capacity limitations on hunting. No full auto is about the only weapon limit I know of ( I and severlal guys I know hunt with supressed guns)

3)Collapseable stock, HBAR , painted pink , does not matter. The only exception is class 3, ( Took 13 weeks for my last supressor approval so 48 hours is theleast of your worries)

PS where you thinking of buying it from, Some stores are GREAT, others suck, At Gander for instance you will pey $1000 more then the rifle is worth. Post where you are and I will direct you tword a good scary looking rifle dealer that won;t rape you. I know more then a few on a first name basis in this state.
