  1. Benitez was actually 17 when he won his first World Title.  I watched Sweet Pea in his prime from the Olympics until he got trounced by Trinidad.  I also watched Benitez against Ray, Tommy, and the best welters of the late 70s and early 80s and the guy was a force.  The Hearns fight was one of the best fights I have ever seen and I have watched literally hundreds of them.  They were both superb defensive fighters but I think that over 15 rounds, at welterweight, I would have to go with Wilfred Benitez by a slim decision.  He was that good.

  2. Total snoozer IMO, but at welterweight, my guess would be Benitez(a much bigger man), who was underestimated power-wise and made a very fast Sugar Ray Leonard miss A LOT in their bout. Sweet Pea would be frustrated throughout and would be forced to be the aggressor(not his strength). Also, Sweet Pea never had to go 15 rounds, so there's new territory to consider..................

  3. i agree pretty much with the guys above me, sweet pea taking a boring decision over benietz

  4. I agree with the guy above me but I like boxing so this would be a very interesting fight school would be in for defense 101 two masters of hitting and not getting hit Benitez was the youngest world champion ever at 18 years old Pernell Whitaker Olympic Gold medal winner south paw speed and a big heart the first 4 rounds would be a boxing match each fighter trying to counter the other after the 4th Whitaker would step up his attack and Whitaker's left had would start to find Benitez body and would begin to break him down after the 10th Benitez would have no answer and would be frustrated and make a fatal mistake and get caught with a straight left to the jaw and go down for the count of 8 he would get up but the damage would be done Whitaker would be on him like a pimp on a w***e with out his money. It,s allover in the 10th roundwith Bevitez crumbling to the floor beaten down. Great fight

  5. These two are so defensively sound it be the only fight in history where a round ends and NEITHER fighter lands a punch.  Remember the stories of Willie Pep winning a round without landing a punch.  I don't know if that would fly today but still  it's a testament of his defensive skills and greatness.

If ANYONE had better defensive than Benitez it's Whitaker.  Benitez suffered more knockdowns than Whitaker, not because of his chin but because he wasn't always in the best of shape.  He was very talented but RARELY trained as hard as he could.  Also, I can't forget Pernell making De La Hoya miss EIGHT punches while standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.

I have not seen Benitez GUT IT OUT in ways Pernell has had to at times.  I can still remember Pernell's sub-par performance against Diosbelys Hurtado.  He was behind on points and Turned it One to stop Hurtado.  Benitez has never shown that kind of heart.  He was rarely motivated.  He also never BEAT the competition that Pernell did.  He FACED better competition.  The difference is that he only beat a post-prime Duran.

In a dull fight I see Whitaker getting bold at moments and moving ahead on points.  He might try for a KO but I don't think he would succeed.

    Whitaker W15
