Pernilla Lindberg grabs first-round lead at Jamie Farr Toledo Classic 2012
Swedish Pernilla Lindberg surprised the spectators in the opening round of Jamie Farr Toledo Classic 2012, as she shot an impressive 64 to grab an early lead against her rivals.
The tournament being played at Highland Meadows Golf Club, Ohio, is featuring most of the prominent LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars but players from different countries dominated the leaderboard
in the opening round.
South Korean Chella Choi displayed a stunning performance as she carded a 66 on the leaderboard to share the second spot along with Meredith Duncan of the United States, Numa Gulyanamitta of Thailand, French
Karine Icher, Japanese Mika Miyazato and Angela Stanford of the United States.
Despite a strong field that is also featuring the defending champion Na Yeon Choi of South Korea, Lindberg was hard to ignore as she played a balanced game throughout the first day.
Lindberg kicked off the round in impressive style as she parred the first three holes. She then amazed the spectators after she drained two back-to-back birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-4 fifth hole. The
Swedish star reeled off her third birdie on the par-4 9th hole.
On the back nine, Lindberg looked a little rattled as she made mistakes on some holes. Analysts said the LPGA titan played with plenty of confidence, but she could have piled up an even bigger score.
On the 10th hole, Lindberg judged the ball superbly and carded a birdie. She made the most of favourable weather conditions. After sinking another birdie on the 12th, she faltered on the
next hole as she could not tackle the pressure on putting green, carding a bogey.
Offsetting the impact of the bogey on the 13th, she swung into action once again and shot two straight birdies on the difficult par-3 14th and par-4 15th hole. On the 18th
she carded yet another birdie.
Speaking to the media about her sensible start at Ohio, the Swede said that she is pretty excited after posting a huge score in an event being graced by big names.
“I had a great day on the greens.  It was really my putting that was the key today.  I obviously put myself in good positions to make those putts,” Lindberg said.
