Pernilla Lindberg ties for 5th at the end of the opening round at German Open
Pernilla Lindberg of Sweden displayed an amazing performance in the first round of the Unicredit Ladies German Open, as she posted a 68 to tie for the fifth spot on the leaderboard.
Lindberg is playing along with some of the strong contenders of the LET (Ladies European Tour), but her first-round performance appeared to have stunned even the top-ranked players.
The field is featuring key players this year. The defending champion Diana Luna, Carly Booth, Carlota Ciganda, Lindsey Wright, Karen Lunn, Carin Koch, Laura Davies, who won the same tournament in the 2010 season.
In addition to Luna and Davies, two other previous champions of the German Open, Amy Yang of South Korea and French Jade Schaeffer are also in the roster, making the event tougher.
Despite the presence of big names, Lindberg remained focused and avoided making careless strokes. She ramped up pressure on her rivals, as she shot four birdies on the front nine. Other players also tried to
surge ahead, but the Swede was quick enough to pile up a big score.
Although four players grabbed the top spot on the leaderboard, Lindberg said that she will try to maintain her solid form in the next round as well. She said that the tournament seemed a little difficult for
her before she entered the course on Thursday morning, but her first birdie boosted her hopes.
Lindberg added that her nerve were a little jumpy at the start of the round, although she recorded four birdies. She pointed out that she was not confident that she would be able to make such a good score on
the front nine, but her strokes were far more perfect on the back nine.
“I was off to a rocky start and a little wild to start off with but on the back nine I managed to keep the ball on the fairway a little bit more and that helped. My putting was really good today,” Lindberg
said.
She went on to say that the course is perfect, and this was what helped her perform well. “The greens are rolling really true so if you put yourself in a position, it’s going to be a birdie-fest out here. You
need to roll it good and make some good putts”.
