Perpignan winger Julien Candelon suspended for six weeks – Rugby news
European Rugby Cup (ERC) has handed Perpignan’s Julien Candelon a six-week suspension for his illegal tackle on Lee Dickson after a hearing on May 11.
The incident took place during the Heineken Cup semi-finals encounter against the Northampton Saints at Milton Keynes on May 1. During the 32nd minute of the game, the Perpignan winger was sin binned as he took out
the Northampton Saints scrum half Lee Dickson in the air. Candelon was lucky enough to receive just a yellow card in the match as the dangerous tackle could easily result in a Red card.
The (ERC) disciplinary commission took notice of the incident after the game. The ERC citing commissioner from Wales, Ray Wilton, took note of the incident and forwarded it for review.
Wilton made the complaint against Agen born winger in contradiction of rugby law 10.4 (e). The law deals with the “Dangerous tackling of an opponent including a tackle or attempted tackle above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the
line of the shoulders.”
International Rugby Board (IRB) recommended bans are depended on the seriousness of the offence and it can range from 2 to 52 weeks.
30-year-old French international appeared before the Independent Judicial Officer, Mark McParland from Ireland, earlier today on Wednesday, May 11. Pierre Becque of Perpignan represented Julien Candelon. It is noteworthy that Perpignan, after their semi-final
clash, had already suspended Candelon.
Candelon did not argue against his tackle and admitted being guilty of carrying out a dangerous tackle on Dickson.
In a statement released by the ERC earlier today, the independent judicial officer found Candelon’s offence as a violation of the IRB code of conduct.
The statement read, “Having taken into account any mitigating and aggravating factors, including Candelon's admittance of guilt, the independent Judicial Officer suspended the player for a period of six (6) weeks running up to and including Sunday, 12 June,
2011, with the start of the suspension backdated to reflect the club's internal suspension.”
Perpignan ended their 2010/11 French Top 14 season in ninth position with 63 points. Perpignan won 13 of the 26 games while losing 10 and drawing three games.
Julien Candelon joined Perpignan in 2007 and ever since has remained an integral part of the outfit. The suspension will have no effect on Perpignan as they are already out of Top 14 and Heineken Cup’s knock-out stages.
