Perry Barr plays host to exciting 480m race card
It was another exciting day at the races at the Perry Barr Stadium in Birmingham. Greyhound racing fans were shown a good time with 12 action-packed 480m races on the card.
The first race of the day was an A5 race held at 11:11. Coming into this race, the odds makers ranked Glenske Raider as the favourite with 9-4 odds of winning. However, despite the lofty ranking, Glenske Raider came in second place, finishing the race in 29.59. He crowded and baulked first, but bounced back to challenge the run in.
Glenske Raider was only a ½ length behind the winner, Sonia Maldini, who checked in with a time of 29.55. Her odds were listed at 7-2 before the race. She held an early pace out of trap six, and led second.
Finishing in third place was Big Sack (4-1), who was sacked in his attempt to win the race. He finished in 29.67, placing him just a single length behind second place. Odds makers tried to recommend a win for Highly Recommend (7-2), but he fell to fourth place with a time of 29.95. This put him 3½ lengths behind Big Sack.
Bellavista Mist (6-1) was the fifth-place finisher, posting a time of 30.04, 1¼ lengths behind the fourth spot. Last place went to Icemaid Omani (4-1), whose finish of 30.23 was 2¼ lengths behind Bellavista Mist.
Next on the card was an A2 race at 11:28. It featured a strong performance from Slaneyside Dingo, who was finished first with a time of 29.19. He was staked at 4-1 odds pre-race, but was not the favourite to win.
That title was bestowed upon Sheepwalk Fairy (2-1), whose magic was not enough to get her to the top spot. She finished in 29.25 to take third place, ¾ lengths behind second. After a stumbling start, Sheepwalk Fairy managed to run on well.
Placing second was Lissakyle Pearl (7-2), who was just a shoulder’s length behind first place, matching Slaneyside Dingo’s time of 29.19. Fourth place belonged to Lisatunny Mick (7-1), who was only ¾ lengths behind third place in 29.31.
A full 8½ lengths behind Lisatunny Mick was All Heart, who finished the race fifth in 29.99. The sixth and final position went to Townbrow Gold in 30.61. He finished 7¾ lengths behind fifth place, which was not the golden finish he had been looking for.
Racing fans could easily Spot Nannys Boy, who was victorious in the 11:42 A8 race. When he emerged from trap five, he held an early pace, and always led. His 5-2 odds did not brand him as the favourite, however. He finished the race with a time of 29.63.
Second place belonged to Zigzag River (5-1), who rode the rapids to a 29.83 finish, 2½ lengths behind the winner. Drumscraw Minnie (6-1) placed third by just a neck, finishing the race in 29.85.
In the number four position was 7-4 favourite Effernogue Gary, who finished behind third place by 1 length in 29.93. It was a disappointing result for the favourite, who crowded first. His woes continued as he crowded and stumbled quarter.
Rounding out the pack were Monkspath Mackie (8-1) and Effernogue Dusty (4-1), who finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Monkspath Mackie was 1½ lengths behind fourth place with a time of 30.05, while Effernogue Gary was a neck behind Monkspath Mackie, finishing the race in 30.08.
The greyhound racing excitement at Perry Barr Stadium continues this week, with the next race night being called for Friday 3 September. The first race of the 12-race card is scheduled to begin at 19:25.
