Perry Jones scores 27 as Baylor Bears defeat Prairie View A&M Panthers 90-54: NCAA Recap
Perry Jones III broke out of an awful shooting slump in his season debut to score 27 points, helping the Baylor Bears to wrap up its season-opening six-game home stand undefeated with a 90-54 victory over Prairie View A&M Panthers
on November 29, 2011 at Ferrell Center, Waco.
It was sixth consecutive loss for A&M Panthers after winning the first two games of this season. The 6-foot-11 sophomore forward went 10 for 14 from the field and 7 for 9 from free throw line. The 20-year-old missed his five games
of this season in order to complete an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits before he joined the Bears.
"Just be a beast. Just play like I know how to play and don't be nervous out there," said Jones. "Just play team ball and everything will click, and that's exactly what happened."
Pierre Jackson came off the bench with 17 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds in the victory. Jackson shot perfect in all categories, including 4 for 4 from the floor, 2 for 2 from three-point range and 7
for 7 from free throw line.
Quincy Acy recorded a double-double in the victory with 13 points on 7 for 8 shooting from the line and a game-best 11 rebounds.
“It’s always good to have the young fella playing with me,” said Quincy Acy said of Jones’ brilliant performance. “He brings a different dimension to the game. He just changes the game in so many different ways.”
Cory Jefferson ended with 12 points and three blocks while Deuce Bello racked up 10 points for Baylor.
Montreal Scott led Prairie View with 14 points on a 4 for 5 shooting from downtown while Jules Montgomery registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. However, Montgomery committed a game-high six rebounds in the
loss.
The Bears went 28 for 54 (51.9 percent) from the field and 30 for 37 (81.1 percent) from the line while the Panthers ended on just 20 for 60 (33.3 percent) and 5 for 12 (41.7 percent) from charity stripe.
Prairie View scored the first eight points of the game and surged to an 11-2 run early in the first half before the Bears posted the next six points to cut Baylor’s lead to three, 11-8.
Montreal Scott hit a jumper to make it 13-8 but Pierre Jackson punctuated five unanswered points to tie the game at 13. Ryan Gesiakowski then responded with a shot from downtown to put the A&M Panthers ahead by three, 16-13.
The Beers however woke up from the slumber and reeled off a 33-8 run in the ensuing passage of the first half and finished it with a lead of 46-24. The burst completely put the Panthers away and were not to muster any sort of a
comeback in the second frame.
