  1. It's not like the curtain goes up at a specific time. Earth has been going through the diffuse meteor stream for several days already and will reach the middle of it sometime tomorrow. You can see Perseid meteors at any time of the night for several nights in mid-August. The first answerer was referring only to moonset, which will make the sky darker and let you see fainter (and hence more) meteors. Sport stud bo came along and parroted the first guy's answer without understanding it in the slightest.

I just now went outside and saw several meteors. Two of them were particularly good.

One was rather slow (for a meteor). It crossed half the sky and seemed to leave a trail that remained incandescent for about 10 degrees behind the meteor. I seemed to get the impression of smokiness in this incandescent trail.

The other really good meteor was a bit faster, and man was it BRIGHT. It started around Cassiopeia and went all the way across the sky toward the southeast, and it was still bright as it met my SE horizon. Maybe that one landed? It'd probably be on Droop Mountain somewhere, or past it toward Lewisburg WV.

  2. It has already started. It lasts for several days. The peak time for viewing will be after midnight, preferably after the Moon sets. Look high up and face the northeast - you may be able to see the classic "W" shape of Cassiopeia. Perseus is just below that, and that is the direction from which the meteors will generally originate, although you will see them scattered across the entire sky.

  3. not really at night, 2-3 in the morning which is 2 or 3 hours after midnight.

  4. 2 to 3am

  5. The meteor shower will start at about 2 to 3 AM tomorrow morning... after the moon sets, which will cut out a lot of that pesky light pollution the moons gives off, so this year will be great for observing. You should be able to see about 60 meteors tonight.
