  1. Arabs use the term Arabian Gulf, Iranians use Persian Gulf. This is just a result of good old fashioned nationalistic chauvinism.

Funny story: I had always heard Persian Gulf, when I used that term with a Palestinian friend of mine he asked "what's that?" I said "The body of water between Saudi Arabia and Iran". "Oh", he said, "You mean the Arab Gulf"

  2. Really it is Persian Gulf historically and logically.

  3. Both, to the  Iranian its Persian gulf and to the Arabians its Arabian gulf.

  4. It depends who you ask.

Historically, its the Persian Gulf. To the Persians (Iranians), its the Persian Gulf.

Ask some Arabs, its the Arabian Gulf.

Throughout most of our history, the water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula has been called the Persian Gulf. Only recently, starting with Arab nationalist regimes in Egypt in Iraq, has it been referred to as the Arabian Gulf.

Some folks site Gamal Abdel Nasser as the instigator in the name change. He was a pan-Arab nationalist leader and former Egyptian president.

Though formally (like with the UN) it is still known as the Persian Gulf, many agencies are including a notation of alternate name and calling it the Arabian Gulf as well.

Its not different than many of the land disputes going on in the area (and many others) - people want to claim something for their own and folks who perviously did aren't happy about it ...

And if you ask Osama Bin Laden what its called, he will tell you it is the "Islamic Gulf" .....
