Hiya, I want to buy my dad a personalised number plate for his birthday but I'm a bit confused and the dvla faqs don't make much sense to me cos I'm totally clueless about cars!

I know you can't buy a plate with a newer reg than the car so I need to know if it's the 1st number that indicates age or the 1st and 2nd? My dad's current plate starts with DK so do I need to buy another DK plate or is one starting with just D ok?

Thank yooouuu x

  1. Its its DK53 for example it will be an 2003 plate or DK03 will also be a 2003 plate

  2. say if it is 05 then it can only be 2005 but if it is a 55 then it can be bothe late 2005 and early 2006. your best bet is to put the reg number into a reg look up system i think there is 1 on the auto trader website.

  3. what are the two numbers after the dk, if its 52 its an 02 car, 53 is an 03 etc etc

  4. Three different systems have been used to indicate the vehicle age over the last 40+ years, a suffix letter from 1963 through 1983, a prefix letter from 1983 through 2001, and a numerical indicator since 2001.

    So depending upon the format of the number:

    ABC 123D -- The "D" on the end is the year letter (A=1963 through to Y=1982/83).

    A123 BCD -- The "A" at the beginning is the age (A=1983/84 through to Y=2001)

    AB 51 CDE -- The "51" is the age, and under this current system the numbers go in 6-monthly blocks:

    51 = September 2001 thru February 2002

    02 = March 2002 thru August 2002

    52 = September 2002 thru February 2003

    03 = March 2003 thru August 2003

    53 = September 2003 thru February 2004

    And so on.

    As you noted, you can have any EARLIER number, but not a later one.  You may also buy a "dateless" number if you wish, such as the ABC 1234 format still used in Northern Ireland, or  any pre-1963 number you can get hold of which has no year letter at all -- ABC 123,  AB 1234,  1234 AB, etc.

  5. most of them i can see would confuse you.

    made simple just put in dvla registrations.

    look for any plate you want without 2 letters at the front, ie h1 dad

    H12 DAD. M1 DAD. R5 OLE etc, find the one you like and buy it. all the rest is easy, give your dad the plates and the paperwork and he can do the rest, if he is a cop he could have L 999 COP, just being silly but have a look and these are a lot cheaper and look better.

  6. If your dads car starts with 2 letters then 2 numbers then the 2 numbers indicate the year of the car

    i.e DK05  = 2005 1st half of the year

         DK55  = 2005 2nd part of year

    you do not need to buy a plate with the same letters

  7. You don't need to buy anything starting with DK or D so long as if it's a 55 plate you cant buy anything above 55 and so on.

  8. dk means nothing its the next two numbers . 05 means 2005 and so on . 55 means september 2005
