  1. Generally speaking donkeys are more stubborn. They are also calm as compared to horses, generally speaking. Since they are less likely to spook, they make better pack animals. That is why the army used donkeys and mules as pack animals to carry supplies.

  2. The donkey is a more somber mooded animal while the horse is more excitable, and definitely more erratic when excited. A horse can be spunky, but a donkey can be plain stubborn. I would say that both animals are equally human - sensitive, warm and friendly, but the horse is more proactive and positive in its style and that makes it appear more friendly.

  3. idk i have never had a donkey

  4. I got a mini-donkey for a pasture pal for my horses.  He does a good job at that :)  He is loud, thank god I live out in the country.  I got him about 1 1/2 ago, he is about 10-11.  He was not in good condition when I got him.  He is very timid around adults, but is ok with kids.  It has to be his idea to do something.  If he doesn't want to do it he won't! I haven't bonded with him yet, they take longer if you get them when they are older.  I go very slowly with him, not sure what he has been through.   He is great for the ferrier and vet.  He is easy to take care of, he goes for walks when I take the horses out and just follows behind.  I let him loose in the yard and just hangs around, never leaves.   He likes it when I got and play with him and the horses.  I think it just depends for both horses, donkeys or mules when you get them and what they have been through.

  5. Basing this off of my horses, and the donkeys at my place, donkeys (and mules) can be extremely stubborn.  When they dont want to do something, good luck trying to convince them to do it! They are very loud, and when one starts braying, they all do, and you can hear them from miles away.  They are also sweet as can be! We have one that gives you kisses and they just want to be in your pocket.  Even our stud donkey is a major sweetie.  BUt like others have said, this can all change with the individual!

  6. there isn't much of a difference, because some horses are just as stubborn as donkeys and some donkeys are willing to please like horses,so it really all depends on the animal its self, but it also depends on what you want them for,if you want them for riding,a horse,if you just want a friend or something to eat your left overs a donkey, donkeys are more hardy though, they are harder to accidentally kill....

  7. We had a donkey on our dairy farm when I was growing up.  He passed at 28 yrs and I think that had to be a record somewhere. We buried at the base of a big old silver oak in the cow pasture.  We kept him with the cows as if coyotes were around and a cow had calved in the pasture he would drive them off.  His name was Mo.  No idea why.  If we had visiting small children we wanted to 'turn loose' we would put him in a small paddock with a pony saddle and a rope and halter.  He would just walk around and if they really hit him hard with halter rope he might trot back to the gate.  Like _help_.

He was pretty smart and sweet tempered.  We also had a white mule and he was a kick, much smarter and more aggressive then the donkey.  The mule could open any gate so we had to use a chain and snap on his gate or he'd be all over the place.  The horses did not mind Mo but he loved those cows and that is where he wanted to be.  He would always l**k calves and stand by the fence so he could reach the weanling heifers through the fence and l**k them.

I think  horses are just a whole different critter.  More spooky, easier to train partly because of those same fears, smarter I think.  Mo never seemed spooked about anything and was a demon with stray dogs or coyotes if they came around his Cows.  He never balked with us but I've heard they can and will.  When we went out to irrigate he would come right over and watch us in a pleasant manner.  If someone came out in the field with his cows he would go up to them and follow them around kind of like a curious dog.

    Hope this helped!  :)

  8. I've never handled a donkey, but from what I've seen (We have a couple at our barn), not much. They both can be extremely hard headed and pushy but they can also the biggest sweethearts, it just depends on the individuals. But from what I've heard, donkeys are much more persistent and stubborn.

  9. Donkeys bond hard with their owner and very common are one person animals.  They may 'tolerate' those that aren't their owners.. but usually will just work for that one person once this happens.  They have to trust you to do what you are asking, thats where the 'stubbornness' comes in.  They aren't stubborn, they are highly intelligent animals and unless they can mentally understand why you are asking what you want, and if its safely in their best interest... you better be a good negotiator.  They will never do anything to harm themselves, they have to think things through, which is why for every one hour of horse training, about 3 more go into donkey training.

Horses you can force submission into, donks you can't.

Horses also can bond with their owners, but usually will work for multiple people.

  10. Donkeys are more stubborn sometimes, but are also a little sturdier. It depends alot on the horse/donkey you are talking about.

  11. ive heard that donkeys are much more stubborn than horses but idk. ive never had a donkey.
