Perth Standlick and Gabriel Medina emerge triumphant in Round 3 at Reef Hawaiian Pro
Australia’s Perth Standlick and Brazil’s Gabriel Medina clinched victory in their respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, opening event of the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which continued at the North
Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Saturday, November 17, 2012.
Both the surfers advanced to Round 4 (Round of 32) following their Round 3 success.
Accompanying the two victors into the next round were Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau and Evan Valiere after they secured a second-place finish in their respective heats.
With a prize money of $250,000 and coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points on offer, the talented surfers from around the globe continued to put on thrilling performances, with their sights set on the ultimate prize.
Standlick took on Lau, Perrow and Pupo during the 15th heat in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
The Australian surfer got off to a solid start and continued to build on it to eventually post an impressive 8.33 on the score-board.
Standlick went on to add an additional 6.50 points to his account, thus reaching a heat-total of 14.83 points. The score held up until the end to eventually seal the fate of the battle in his favour.
Lau successfully earned his place in the next round as well after scoring a 5.80 and 5.50 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.30 points.
Perrow finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.23 points, while Pupo had to settle for fourth place after registering a two-wave total of 9.67 points.
The 16th heat saw Medina squaring-off with Valiere, Dantas and Davis in a battle for the Round 4 spot.
The Brazilian surfer appeared to be on fire, looking extremely comfortable during the course of the battle.
Locking his first business-wave, Medina executed a combination of exquisite tricks to post an 8.60 points to the score-board and went on to add an additional 8.40 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 17.00 points.
Valiere made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 10.50 points, which included a 6.17 and 4.33-point ride.
Dantas finished in third place with a heat-total of 7.78 points, while Davis was forced to fill out the fourth spot after finishing with a heat-total of 6.60 points.
