Perth Standlick and Jordy Smith emerge triumphant in Round 4 at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Australia’s Perth Standlick and South Africa’s Jordy Smith moved to the quarter-finals at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, second jewel on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after walking away with top honours from the respective
Round 4 (Round of 32) heats that went down at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, December 4, 2012.
Standlick was accompanied by Brazil’s Ricardo Dos Santos into the quarter-finals after the latter finished in second place. Hawaii’s John John Florence finished third, while America’s Nat Young had to settle for fourth place. Both the surfers consequently
got eliminated from the contention for the event title.
The sixth heat saw America’s Brett Simpson secure the quarter-final position along with the heat-winner Smith through a second-place finish. Hawaii’s Billy Kemper and America’s CJ Hobgood, however, failed to make it through into the next stage of the competition
after rounding out the bottom-two position.
The competition got even fiercer on the latest day of the competition as waves with huge faces continued to grace the main event site. The determination to get their hands on the coveted rewards that awaited the winner drove the surfers to push hard during
their four-man battles.
The fifth heat saw Standlick take on Dos Santos, Florence and Young for a place in the quarter-finals.
The Australian surfer got off to an excellent start, clinching a near-perfect 9.33-point off his first business-wave to put himself in lead. Backing away a solid start with an impressive 7.90-point ride, Standlick finished with a heat-total of 17.23 points,
which served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.
Dos Santos made it through into the next stage of the competition as well after securing second place through a heat-total of 13.43 points, which included a 7.00 and 6.43-point ride.
Florence surprisingly put on a relatively lacklustre performance during his latest heat to find himself finish in third place with a heat-total of 11.44 points, while Young had to settle for fourth place due to a two-wave total of 9.67 points.
The sixth heat saw Smith walk away with the win after getting the better of Simpson, Kemper and Hobgood.
The South African surfer began his charge with a 7.10-point ride and went on to back it up with a 6.93-point wave to register a decisive heat-total of 14.03 points.
Simpson finished in second place with a heat-total of 11.17 points, which comprised of a 6.17 and 5.00-point ride.
Kemper finished third with a heat-total of 8.94 points, while Hobgood filled out the bottom spot after failing to do any better than a two-wave total of 6.50 points.
