Perth Standlick and Seal Holmes enjoy success on opening day of Billabong Pro J-Bay
Australia’s Perth Standlick and South Africa’s Sean Holmes successfully advanced to the second round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP 6-star Billabong Pro J-Bay after claiming victory in their respective Round 1 (Round of 144)
heats that went down at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, on Tuesday, July 10.
The third heat saw Australia’s Brent Savage finished one place behind his compatriot Standlick to accompany the latter into the second round of the competition. South Africa’s Warren Dean and Hawaii’s Kevin Sullivan were unable to make the Round 2 cut after
rounding out the bottom-two positions.
Brazil’s Luel Felipe secured runner-up place in the fourth heat to join the winner of the heat Holmes in the second round. Hawaii’s Ian Gentil and Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth rounded out the bottom-two positions to find themselves ejected from the contention
for the event title.
With solid two-metre plus waves breaking at the primary event site on the opening day of the competition, the surfers were convinced that they would be feasting their eyes on a handful of memorable performances. Some of the top surfers from around the globe
were present in the competition field, eager to get a share of the US$155,000 along with coveted ASP World Ranking points.
The third heat of Round 1 saw Standlick prevail over his rivals in the four-man battle after finishing with a heat-total of 10.94 points, which comprised of a 6.17 and 4.77-point ride. The performance was nothing to write home about, but it still served
to bring an ideal result for the Australian surfer.
Savage successfully extended his life in the event as well after scoring a 3.17 and 5.73 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 8.90 points, which put him in runner-up place.
Dean and Sullivan failed to make a solid impact, finishing with a heat-total of 8.17 and 7.70 points respectively to find themselves eliminated from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Holmes make use of his local knowledge of the waves to completely steal the show. Despite deploying a conservative strategy, he managed to get his hands on a 6.67 and 7.60-point ride, eventually finishing with a winning heat-total of
14.27 points.
Felipe made the Round 2 cut as well after securing a second-place finish with a heat-total of 10.10 points, which included a 5.50 and 4.60-point ride.
Gentil finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.57 points, while Toth had to settle for the bottom-position after registering a heat-total of 7.83 points.
