Perth Standlick and Wiggolly Dantas power into Round 3 at first Vans Triple Crown of Surfing event
Australia’s Perth Standlick and Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas were able to successfully extend their life in the first of three events on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, Reef Hawaiian Pro, after walking away with top honours from
their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Friday, November 16, 2012.
Standlick clinched victory during the 15th heat to advance to the third round (Round of 64), while Hawaii’s Evan Valiere accompanied him after securing runner-up place. Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth finished third, while Australia’s Mitch Crews had
to settle for bottom position. Both the surfers found themselves eliminated from the competition as a result.
The 16th heat concluded with Dantas and Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau making it through into the next round after successfully claiming the first and second position respectively. Hawaii’s Joshua Moniz finished in third place, while America’s Evan Geiselman
rounded out the bottom-two position, which removed from the contention for the event title.
The $250,000 prize purse and coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points on offer at the event resulted in the continuation of adrenaline-pumping action at Alii Beach on the latest day of the competition.
Squaring-off with Valiere, Toth and Crews in the 15th heat, Standlick put on an impressive performance to make it through into the next round.
The Australian surfer scored a 6.50 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 5.57-point ride to get to a heat-total of 12.07 points. The score held up until the end to see him through to victory.
Valiere was able to extend his life in the event as well by securing runner-up place during the four-man battle through a heat-total of 10.60 points, which included a 6.33 and 4.27-point ride.
Toth finished third with a heat-total of 7.94 points, while a two-wave total of 6.14 points forced Crews to settle for fourth place.
The final heat of the round and also last heat of the day pitted Dantas against Lau, Moniz and Geiselman.
The Brazilian surfer got off to a solid start, earning an 8.67 off his first business-wave to take the lead and went o to back it up with a 4.87-point ride, which moved him to a heat-total of 13.54 points. The lead held up until the end to earn him the win.
Lau was able to make the Round 3 cut as well after scoring a 7.50 and 3.93 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.43 points.
Moniz finished third with a heat-total of 9.67 points, while Geiselman had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 8.37 points.
